The master salt comes with a beautiful pewter spoon. The dish may be as useful as your imagination! Rest assured there is no lead in this new, hand-fashioned pewter. SALT CELLARS, MASTER SALTS AND SUGAR BOWLS In the Colonial Period, sugar and salt were precious. Salt was served in small bowls. These salt cellars, with tiny spoons, were placed at each table setting. They were filled from a larger bowl or Master Salt, that might be lidded or not. Sugar was served in open bowls, since only what would be used at a time was put out and anything left was stored away. A lid on that bowl would have been a waste of material. Collectively, we did not allow ourselves that kind of frivolity until after the War of 1812.
