Earthy, Honest, Refreshing Folk Art
| Folk Art does not comply with the standard rules of art. It is carried in the heart of the artist and is expressed on the canvas through the eyes of experience and the heart of dedication. Much folk art is seen as through the eyes of a child--full of awe and wonderment. Exaggeration is prevalent in much folk art and dimension is quite often distorted. Though many of the folk artists are not formally trained, they are extremely gifted and possess a wonderful freedom of expression. Spectrum color is quite often intense. Use your imagination and let your "fun" side rejoice in the simplicity and surprise of the folk art rendering, whether flat or 3-dimensional. We encourage you to look at examples of folk art in both antique and contemporary genres. Look at handcrafted hooked rugs, Kentucky made bark baskets, Ohio fashioned redware, tole painting from Virginia and penny rug designs. |
